Prison Dharma Network: 20 Years of Service!

Posted on May 30th, 2009 by Peacemaker Institute : Peacemaker Institute Peacemaker Institute
meditation in prison

From Thrangu Rinpoche:
"I am delighted to hear that the Prison Dharma Network is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. The work that the Network has done on behalf of prisoners is wonderful. The Dharma is a way to help free sentient beings from suffering, and so bringing it to those who are experiencing the suffering of imprisonment is especially beneficial. In the short term it helps them quiet their minds, reduce the disturbances of the afflictions, and find peace, and in the long run it will bring them to lasting happiness. This is a tremendous service to them and all other beings as well. I hope that the Prison Dharma Network can continue to provide such beneficial service for many years to come."

From Acharya Pema Chodron:
“I have been honored to serve as a spiritual advisor to the Prison Dharma Network since its founding and fully endorse the work they continue to accomplish. Through my own experience with prisoners, I have directly witnessed the transformative potential of prison meditation programs. Please support Prison Dharma Network in any way you can."

"Integral Peacemaker Training has provided me with effective methods for building bridges between my contemplative spiritual practice and the secular realm of social engagement and activity. It's integrative approach has expanded my awareness of the interconnectedness of self and other in interpersonal relationships, and also, in a wider, more expansive view, in societal and political manifestations as a part of groups and systems of all kinds. Dhamma Brothers @ Boulder Theatre

Posted on Oct 26th, 2008 by Peacemaker Institute : Peacemaker Institute Peacemaker Institute

Monday November 17th @ 7:30pm

East meets West in the Deep South. An overcrowded maximum-security prison—the end of the line in Alabama’s correctional system—is forever changed by the influence of an ancient meditation program. Behind high security towers and a double row of barbed wire and electrical fence dwells a host of convicts who will never see the light of day. But for some of these men, a spark is ignited when it becomes the first maximum-security prison in North America to hold an extended Vipassana retreat, an emotionally and physically demanding course of silent meditation lasting ten days. This film, with the power to dismantle stereotypes about men behind prison bars also, in the words of Sister Helen Prejean (Dead Man Walking), “gives you hope for the human race."
